Launch: Grounds #1
Launch Grounds #1 by the Sint Lucas Antwerpen Research Group (SLARG)
+ DJ set Jonathan Cant
Thu 29 May
5-7pm
On Thursday, May 29th, we’re celebrating the launch of Grounds #1, the new research journal from the Sint Lucas Antwerp Research Group (SLARG), at Extra City Kunsthal Antwerp.
Grounds builds on the legacy of TYPP, offering a broad perspective on artistic research. The name reflects the different “grounds” of inquiry—material, conceptual, and beyond. Rather than presenting finished results, Grounds highlights artistic research as an evolving process, fostering exchange and new perspectives.
For this first edition, four artistic researchers will bring their work to life in the choir of Extra City:
🔹 Pierre-Antoine Vettorello traces the history of African textile shops in Paris through a picture slideshow and a mapping of locations.
🔹 Joud Toamah explores memory and water cultures in Syria, reading from her hybrid essay, accompanied by a short video (3 minutes, on loop).
🔹 Bianca Baldi examines ‘racial passing’ and fluid identity in an experimental lecture performance based on her essay.
🔹 Mona Hedayati opens with a brief performance as a demo of her practice, followed by a discussion on the affective frequencies of migration.
Artist and researcher Jonathan Cant will join us to play a DJ set departing from his contribution to the recently published AdMa TYPP (the publication by the Avanced Master of Research in Arts and Design participants, Sint Lucas Antwerpen).
Meet the researchers, chat over a drink, and take home a copy of Grounds #1—free at the event. A perfect stop during Antwerp Art Weekend!
Welcome!
