On the labour of others, Dead or Alive

18/01/2018 van 19:30 tot 21:00

GLUON, Slachthuisstraat 4-6, Brussel

St Lucas School of Arts (Antwerp) is organising a series of public lectures around the topic ‘Why Work?’. Speakers from various disciplines are invited to elaborate on their practice, and engage with MA students from St Lucas in a preceding workshop. What is the motivation and structure underpinning their work? How to remain critical? What happened to the promise of leisure—as Liam Gillick put it in his eponymous essay—and what is the importance of doing nothing? And last but not least, how do these speakers consider their position as cultural workers?

Haseeb Ahmed (b.1985) is a research-based artist. Originally from the US, he now lives and works in Brussels. He produces objects, site-specific installations, films, and writes for various publications.

Its final part will be shown as a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Antwerp in October 2018. Ahmed lectures at the Zurich University of the Arts and has taught courses and workshops at a number of universities.

This project involves a PhD in practice-based arts in at the University of Antwerp and Sint Lucas Antwerp School of Art and Design. Haseeb received his Masters from the MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
