Winterschool participants present a collectively written novella.
In a 5 day workshop led by artist and The
Book Lovers founder, David Maroto, 16 participants from different European Art Schools have collectively
written a novella.
The workshop focused on the connection between narrative fiction and contemporary visual art, and took the form of a collaborative creative writing session.
The novella, called Greta M, is set in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp (M HKA), where the workshop also took place, and tells the story of the disappearance of a priceless sketch book from the museum’s collection, through the eyes of Greta, a member of the cleaning staff. As the police search for the missing artefact, Greta starts her own search for a missing piece of her life. Part diary, part mystery, the novella chronicles the thoughts and intrigues of a tormented soul, masked behind the appearance of an ordinary person.
The workshop’s participants, art and design students from Sint Lucas Antwerpen, ECAV Switzerland and HDG Leipzig, cordially invite everyone for the presentation of the novella on 3 February 2017, 3pm in INBOX, M HKA, Leuvenstraat 32, 2000 Antwerp.

The book lovers is a research project on the phenomenon of artist’s novels curated by David Maroto and Joanna Zielinska. The central question of this research is how a literary genre such as the novel becomes a medium in the visual arts, exactly as video or installation could be. The growing collection is the result of a research carried out by David Maroto and Joanna Zielinska, and it has been acquired by M HKA, to be part of the museum’s collection.
The Winterschool is an annual interdisciplinary workshop coordinated by Sint Lucas Antwerpen and ECAV Switzerland.
Special thanks to M HKA, Sint Lucas Antwerpen and ECAV Switzerland for making this event possible.
